Cold-Shooting Inferno Falls To Cougars

More news about: Alverno

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- A cold-shooting night prevented Alverno College from snapping its current skid as host Concordia University Chicago downed the Inferno 69-50 Wednesday night in Geiseman Gymnasium.

The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leading Cougars (4-1, 3-0 NACC) never trailed in the contest, shooting 48 percent from the field, compared to the Inferno's 33 percent performance. The Inferno (1-5, 0-3) also struggled from the free-throw line, connecting on just 7-of-15 attempts.

A bright spot for the Inferno was its 45-33 rebounding advantage led by Katelyn Bartlett's game-high 11 rebounds.

Unfortunately the dominance on the glass didn't extend to the backcourt as the Inferno was forced into 30 turnovers, 16 more than the Cougars. Alverno had not committed 30 turnovers since the 2007-08 season, but tonight was the second time it has done so this season.

Nyakok Duop came off the bench and shot 7-of-9 for a team-high 14 points for the Inferno. Mollie Mikyska scored 13 and Tessa Mersberger added 11 for Alverno, while Jaela DeJean led the host Cougars with 15.

Alverno's season-opening seven-game road swing finally comes to a close on Saturday at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. downtown.
